Contact (Nintendo DS)

No this isn’t Earthbound, it is Grasshopper Manufacture’s quirky RPG where you search out parts to recover the spaceship. In Contact the top screen has an 8-bit styled ship where the professor stays and can help Terry out by giving him clues. The bottom screen is where the action is. Terry can fight monsters by using decal attacks with the stylus to attach stickers to monsters. Besides decal attacks Terry has a mind of his own and can attack enemies his own way. There are a bunch of different side quests in Contact like fishing, cooking and dating. Contact is almost ready for a launch, look forward to it coming out later this summer.

Deep Labyrinth (Nintendo DS)

Originally this game started off as a cell phone game in Japan, but its popularity grew so much that it became a Nintendo DS title. The game is a dungeon crawler played from a first person perspective. Using the touch screen players can swing their sword with a flick of the stylus and cast spells by drawing pictures in a grid. There are two different scenerios that players can try out. The first is with a boy and his dog, a light hearted story. The other scenario is your traditional RPG where you play as a knight. The game’s scenario design was done by Masato Katou who worked on Chrono Trigger. Yasunori Mitsuda who composed the score of Xenosaga and the Chrono series also jumped in on the project.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner (Playstation 2)

The latest in the MegaTen universe is a 1920’s detective story with art by Kazuma Kaneko. Unlike the other MegaTen games Devil Summoner has a real time battle system where players are aided by a computer controlled demon. Raidou is directly controlled and he can fire his pistol or do a three hit combo with his sword. Gameplay is broken down in different cases that tie into the main plot. Demons play another role besides casting elemental spells. During your investigations Raidou may not be able to complete an interrogation. If talking doesn’t work a demon pal with psychic powers can do the trick. Interesting to note is that SMT: Devil Summoner’s localization will incorporate 1920’s slang for the US version.

Touch Detective (Nintendo DS)

While were on the subject of investigative work let’s introduce Touch Detective. This game hails back to the era of point and click adventures. You can explore rooms with the stylus to lift up a carpet or inspect a shelf. Unlike Phoenix Wright, Touch Detective focuses more on exploration than text based gameplay. Probably most notable about the game is the art style.

Rule of Rose (Playstation 2)

Originally this cinematic powerhouse was released by SCEI, but Atlus picked it up for a North American release. A young girl named Jennifer, whose parents were killed in a tragic airship accident, is taken to the Rose Garden Orphanage, located in a remote portion of the English countryside. What Jennifer discovers is a dilapidated building and a ragtag mob of children who call themselves the “Aristocracy of the Red Crayon.” The demented residents of Rose Garden kidnap Jennifer and take her into the dark heart of an impossibly large zeppelin, on a meandering course for a distant land. Now, with the help of a canine companion named Brown, Jennifer has to find valuable gifts for the Aristocracy, or suffer a fatal punishment for her insolence. The game is a survival horror game, but Jennifer’s dog will play a key role. Brown can use his sense of smell to track down different people.
