The Opera web browser is scheduled to come to Japan on July 24th. With the DS cart and the additional extended memory cartridge bundled with the package DS owners will be able to surf the web. The browser has touch screen recognition, which should make it easier to input long URLs. Nintendo of America has not announced details about a US release of the browser, but the Japanese browser does have a US keyboard built in to it. The DS browser actually comes in two versions one designed for the regular (phat) DS and the other for the DS Lite. The DS Lite browser features a secondary cartridge that does not stick out. Also in other news the Wii will have a built in Opera browser so you can surf the web on your TV. Check below for some screenshots of the DS browser.

I think its great that they are bringing the internet to the DS. And just so people know, both versions of the DS browser for DS Phat and DS Lite have the same quality and same applications (meaning niether have video or sound). A word of advice though, the DS Phat version works on both the DS Phat and DS Lite, whereas the DS Lite version only works on the DS Lite, so make sure you buy the right one. The Nintendo Online Store only sells the DS Phat version, so if you want the DS Lite version, you have to go to another online seller like Amazon.com.

OMG - I’m speechless. I read about the DS browser add-on on Ars Technica, but I’m glad to see screenshots with a US keyboard! I’m putting down 7/24 on my calendar.
