Sega is re-releasing Sonic the Hedgehog for the gazillionth time, this time for the GBA. Ok, but this time there is actually a reason to try out the cleverly named, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis. This is the first time that Sonic has his spin dash in Sonic 1. The move where Sonic can rev up and blast forward was introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 along with his sidekick Tails. Also the game has an unlockable soundtrack, for all the fans that want to hear Green Hill Zone Act 1 over and over again.
Edit: Did we make a mistake? Apparently many of our readers pointed out Sonic could use his spin dash in Sonic 1 in Sonic Jam for the Saturn.

Actually it is not the first time. The option could be enabled on Sonic 1 on Sonic Jams for the Sega Saturn.
Oh ya, I remember Sonic Jam. I even wonder once why the sonic compilation on NGC wasn’t more like Sonic Jam with Sonic 1 Spin Dash and Save States.
That’s because the Sonic games on Sonic Jam were ports, not the original roms running on an emulator. So that allowed them to put in difficulty settings which changed certain aspects of the game and it let them put the spin dash in Sonic 1. It also meant that the background music was encoded into audio files and streamed from the disc, which had a noticeably lower sound quality and caused a slight frame stutter when the audio file had to loop or change.
It’s great news to have the original sonic on GBA but it would be nice to have at least sonic 2 on there as well, shouldn’t conplain though this is great news I’ve been waiting for this for an age.
I also think Go Go Ackman! is a fine game for a GBA port

Would it kill them to compile 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles on the same cart?
