All of the characters in Blue Dragon have a shadowy avatar that helps out during combat. The main character, Shu, has the Blue Dragon which represents the fire inside his heart. Early on the dragon shadow can spew fire from his mouth, but it (and all of the other shadows) can be customized. Jiro’s shadow is the legendary Minotaur, which represents his intelligence. Four of the five main characters have their shadows released and you can see pictures of them below.
Shu / Dragon
Jiro / Minotaur
Kire / Phoenix
Zora / Killer Bat
The point is that that’s what the game’s about. Don’t like it? Move along.
“The point is that that’s what the game’s about. Don’t like it? Move along.”
Invalid answer to my question, move along.
It’s perfectly valid - it’s just that your question is kind of ridiculous. The summoned creature fights for you because that’s the game’s mechanic. Do you complain about all the sneaking in Metal Gear? The jumping in Super Mario Brothers? Hell, why can’t we use guns in Fight Night?
Sakaguchi and Toriyama are responsible for some of the best Japanese RPGs ever made. I somehow doubt that have access to some elusive game-design wisdom that they’ve missed.
Dragon Ball wannabe? Well, Toriyama is the artist behind both, so yeah, there are similarities. Was Dragon Quest VIII a Dragon Ball wannabe too? Or do you just not know what you’re talking about?
TomS, I perfectly know about Akira Toriyama. I’m afraid you’re the one that doesn’t know what the hell this is all about. After seeing a couple of gameplay movies and reading about it, it’s clear that this game is a sad (but potentially successful) attempt into luring the Japanese to the XBOX360 by combining what they love:
1- Turn Base RPGs
2- Akira Toriyama art (Like in DQ)
3- Summonings (Like in FF)
4- Having monsters fight for you (à la Monster Farm, Pocket Monsters, Digimon, etc…)
What’s sad is that you’re convinced you know everything you need to know from a couple of gameplay movies and articles.
You haven’t played the game. Once you have, then you can dish out all the critiques you want. Until then you’re just another troll.

Ignoramus >_>
Once you’ve played as many games as I have, you tend to develop ESP abilities for these sort of things. Well not really, it’s just that game developers rarely have an original idea, so it’s about as predictable as an American eating Fast Food for lunch.
I’ve been gaming regularly since the Odyssey 2, so don’t even try that one.
I’m not looking for something revolutionary, but I am looking for something that will be fun, something that will hold my attention for 40 or 50 hours (at least), something that will satisfy the old-school RPG fan in me while still being “next-gen,” whatever that may mean to you. This game looks like it could do all those things. I like turn-based combat, I like Toriyama’s art style, I like summoning … and I like what I’ve seen of Blue Dragon.
If it was anyone else I’d be more skeptical, but I do have faith in the Mistwalker guys. Their track records, while not perfect, makes me believe that if anyone can come up with a good new IP, it’s them. Plenty of people have already written off Lost Odyssey as well, but I think that one might surprise us.
Why don’t you use your ‘esp’ to make a game importer instead of using it to whine.

Thank you for proving my point. It’s obvious that Lost Odyssey is Mistwalker’s real big project. MS probably requested Mistwalker to come up with a cute melting-pot RPG that would attract the Japanese audience (Blue Dragon) and in exchange, would give them all the available resources and the clear in order to make Lost Odyssey.
Off topic, if you’ve been around since Odyssey 2, how could you not go mad with today’s games being 95% recycled? I got so sick of paying for the same stuff over and over that I sold my XBOX, GameCube and PS2 and was willing to give up on consoles until Nintendo announced something new and innovative.

ESP doesn’t give you ideas, it just allows you to predict the future. Even a twit like you could have ESP and not be any smarter.

One thing I don’t get about this game, what’s the point of having a character and having your “Summoned” creatre fight all the time for you? Why not just have the blue creatures as main characters and not ditch the DragonBall wannabe characters?
