Wii with DVD coming out in North America next year

By Spencer . November 13, 2006 . 7:57am

After a brief segment about the Nintendo Wii in “Morning Call”, CNBC announced that Sonic Systems will have an upgraded Wii in the second half of next year with a DVD player. Previously the upgraded Wii was only confirmed for Japan, but it isn’t too surprising that an upgraded Wii will come out in North America too. It is unknown if the Wii-DVD will cost more or be sold at the same price point $249.99 price point on Sunday. Either way since most gamers already have a DVD player is a DVD enabled Wii really worth waiting for?

I’d rather use a real DVD player and prolong the life of my Wii.

Oh noes, I actually considered waiting for the WiiDVD, but now that I think of it, there are already two in my living room (including the PS2) and considering my roommate still hasn’t figured out how to use the PS2 as a DVD player, maybe a non DVD Wii would be a good choice.

umm… sorry to break the news for y’all, but Nintendo just stated that this was Japan-only… again… I wish they could follow through with stuff, I blame Perrin Kaplan. I don’t care though, I already have 5 DVD players in my house (including computers, ps2, etc.), so this really doesn’t blow me away. As far as I’m concerned, all you should need is a firmware update, so keep your fingers crossed for some future update that enables the Sonic solution for DVD playback.

Honestly I feel there will be more upgrades done to this particular Wii than a DVD player. The DVD function is probably all that has been light-shed at the moment, but who knows what other stuff they’ll do.

Wii Lite?

Stormy Says:

DVD readers have different lenses than the wii would most likely have. So, you would have to have a differently designed drive to run Gamecube, DVD, and Wii discs. It would need more than a firmware update and would require some sort of lisence (sp) to use DVD I am sure.

Jason B. Says:

I don’t think I’ve ever used the DVD player in my PS2 so why would I care if a Wii has one. And knowing the game companies, they’ll probably use the lens from a $30 Wallyworld DVD player and jack the price up $100.

When will console manufacturers learn to concentrate on the GAME part of the console and quit adding extraneous crap that maybe 5% of the customers will use regularly. I’d like to know how much the price of the PS3 increased because they put a useless BluRay player on it instead of just a normal lens.
