Japan lines up for Blue Dragon

Today is an important day for the Xbox 360. Mistwalker and Artoon released Blue Dragon, which is supposedly the game to put the Xbox 360 into the homes of Japanese gamers. Is it working? Yes and no. Before the game was released there was a Blue Dragon countdown party hosted by a model from CanCam magazine where 180 or so eager fans lined up to purchase the game. At 9AM fans were able to purchase the Blue Dragon premium pack, which as a core Xbox 360 (read: the one without the hard drive and no wireless controller), a copy of Blue Dragon, the faceplate and a set of Blue Dragon figures. While Blue Dragon got an impressive Famistu score and has remained one of the ten most anticipated titles in Japan for many weeks, only around 200 people were at the countdown event. What happened? Are gamers in Japan burnt out on waiting in lines after the PS3 and Wii hype? Are they just waiting to buy Blue Dragon at a later date? While Japan gets to play Shu’s adventure early the English speaking world has to wait until 2007 when Mistwalker’s title is localized.

I have to say, right now the 360 looks more appealing on the RPG front than the PS3 does. Blue Dragon and Trusty Bell both look fantastic, and while I sort of want White Knight Story (even at this early stage) I have a feeling I wouldn’t miss it too much.

Whether or not I want to have three incompatible game formats though (I own PS2, GCN/Wii already) is another story.

The CanCam model at the Blue Dragon event in Akihabara was Ebihara Yuri. She did a great job getting all the customers excited.
