Instead of going through the trouble of distributing Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection in stores, Namco Bandai is offering it as a downloadable title. The game is a full Playstation 3 game that runs in 1080i at 60 frames per second. Similar to the PSP version, the Playstation 3 game has “ghost training” where you train a fighter on how you fight in the arcade mode. Compared to the amount of data a blu-ray disc can hold, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection appears tiny with around 800 MB of data. Since the cost of blu-ray media is high, distributing full game over the Playstation network can be an alternative for publishers to save money.
Granted, the games you mentioned are “competent” fighters, but to say Tekken is not is just…wrong. It’s a highly competative game. Sure, nothing will come close to the technicalities of VF (yet….wait for VF5, heh) but it’s still a highly competative game.
Don’t forget along with media cost savings (and zero inventory costs and risks), they likely don’t have to share as much with Sony as they would have to with retailers. While I’m sure Sony will take their cut, no need for retailers slotting fees or co-op spending by going electronic. Nor will this feed the pesky (from a publishers standpoint) used game market.
“(until VF 5…which had BETTER hit the 360)”
Bad luck, wacky 360 fanboy. Now, back in your cage.
I don’t like what this means about the shift to downloadable games. I mean, first of all, you pay a lot for games, if they were all downloaded, and your hard drive got screwed somehow, it’s putting all your eggs in one basket. Second of all, you wouldn’t be able to bring the games to a friends. It does mean an end to long line ups and most distribution though. Video game stores are NOT going to like that, but I guess it’s convenient for the company and the gamers. Heh, although a lot of lazy gamers are going to lose their only reason to ever leave their home.
I don’t know, to many cons, not enough pros.
For a console that was so hopped-up on 1080p, it’s good so many games max out at 1080i. Wankers…

Hooray.
A mediocre fighting game ready to take up hard drive space on a presently unimpressive system. And for how much? Just the cost of your gamer’s soul. Stick with SF: 3rd Strike, Virtua Fighter 4 Evo (until VF 5…which had BETTER hit the 360), and the Samurai Showdown series. THOSE are competent fighters, folks (Soul Calibur’s not bad, either).
