Namco Bandai’s Taiko no Tatsujin series has its seventh game, Taiko no Tatsujin Doka, out in stores. While the main game is still the same drum hitting rhythm game it has a holiday themed mini game where you play as Santa. In Santa Taiko players help Wada Don, the series mascot, deliver presents to children by hitting the drum. When you hit the drum in the middle Wada Don drops presents. Hitting the drum on the left or right edge makes Wada Don slow down or speed up his sleigh. See the holiday cheer brought to you by a drum on a flying sleigh below.
Can’t wait till I get my hands on that Wii from the contest to play this game!
You realize, of course, that unless Namco Bandai decides to port this over to the Wii in the near future, Taiko no Tatsujin Doka will remain a PS2-exclusive.
While the core gameplay never changes in each new installment (and it doesn’t need to; not like there’s much they could possibly add to improve the game when it’s perfectly enjoyable as it is) the main appeal from this series comes from the song list. Even when you’ve had enough of the same gameplay, that could very well be the thing to draw you back in if you’re a fan and there’s a few songs you like.
However, those four minigames included in the package, especially this Christmas themed one where Wada Don dresses as Santa himself, seem pretty addictive and should be a nice break from the norm for this series.
