Three new King of Fighters games in 2007

By Spencer . December 25, 2006 . 12:43pm

Usually there’s a new King of Fighters game released every year, but in 2007 we’re going to see at least three. King of Fighters XII is supposedly going to conclude the “Tales of Ash” arc and is going to be released on the Taito Type X2 arcade system instead of the Atomiswave arcade boards the previous system used. King of Fighters XII is also going to have all new sprites instead of the reused ones from the previous games. Also coming to the arcades is King of Fighters Maximum Impact Regulation A the first version of the 3D Maximum Impact series to come to the arcades. It is also gong to be on the Taito Type-X2 arcade system and it has an additional character in the series, Ash Crimson. Finally for fans of the series SNK is going to release King of Fighters ’98 Ultimate Match for the Playstation 2.

About time we actually saw some new sprites in a KOF title! I was disappointed that there weren’t any redrawn sprites when the series made the transition from the Neo-Geo to the Atomiswave hardrive, so naturally this is just the thing I wanted to see from the very beginning. Even when in “high resolution,” using the same old sprites doesn’t cut it.

I’m also looking forward to Maximum Impact Regulation A, as the Maximum Impact series has really grown on me, even if it isn’t a very complicated fighting series. The fact that SNK were able to successfully translate their flagship fighting series into 3D so flawlessly where others have failed (including Street Fighter EX, and even SNK’s own Samurai Shodown 64) is an accomplishment in and of itself.

Can’t forget about KOF 98 either. That was definitely one of the best installments in the series, thanks to its huge roster of fan favorites from SNK’s previous 2D fighters.

Really looking forward to KoFXII. Not only did I mod my PS2 to play the import of XI (best money I ever spent), but I made my decision largely based on Siliconera’s import review. Even though I really like the sprites of XI (they have a classic look to them), I’m very excited to see them redrawn.

And KoF ’98?! I might just have to import that one as well.

*sigh* I hope they make Ralf Jones bigger than what they’ve been making him, because all “IKARI” games are impossible to beat without actually dying at least once. The first Ikari Warriors for NES was even hard as hell to beat with the cheats… King of Fighters 100%

actually, i heard some rumors that IORI will we redrawn… i wonder if its real. and if the “tales of ash” will be finished in XII, many questions will be left unanswered…
