Last week Sony released Polyphony Digital’s PS3 Gran Turismo project as a free demo via the Playstation store. Ferraris are featured for the first time in Gran Turismo HD, but online racing which was a big feature in the game was removed. Who can complain though, it’s a free game. Those of you that have PS3s probably downloaded it, but for those of you who don’t have one see these screens from Gran Turismo HD. If there’s one thing the Playstation 3 can do it is displaying pretty pictures. Now that this is done maybe Polyphony Digital can finish Gran Turismo 4 Mobile.

One thing I’ve got to know: with all these racing games putting their emphasis on realism, when are they going to allow us to race from behind the dashboard like in the old days of Test Drive, Need for Speed, and Indycar Racing on the PC? With today’s 1080i/p displays capable of pushing more pixels than the average computer monitor, why couldn’t they spare some extra screen real-estate to display the dashboard? They could, theoretically, remove all the artificial HUD elements except the lap-timer and position indicator – and heck, they probably could do away with those as well, and stick them into an in-dashboard computer (like the real-world GPS displays that you can mount).
