Zelda: A Link to the Past now on the virtual console

This week only one new game is out in North America, but it’s a huge one. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is being sold for 800 points. If you haven’t played this on the SNES or got the GBA remake get it, A Link to the Past is one of the best Zelda games and some fans might argue it’s the best of the series. Also interesting to note is that the game is being sold cheaper in the USA (pending exchange rate differences). In Japan Zelda III costs 900 points, so we’re getting it for a hundred points cheaper.

Considering the gradual rising trend in Zelda game appreciation in the US compared to the lack of it in Japan, I’d like to thank Nintendo personally for noticing our interests and giving us a price break. Link to the Past was one of the greatest games for SNES, perhaps best of RPGs [along side Final Fantasy 4 and Secret of Mana - ahh, those were the days!]

Now if I could just see these rumored alter-colored Wiis hit retail so I can get up and at ‘em! Come on Nintendo, I know you want my money. Help me out!

I’m glad to see such a great title released. But I wonder why they are releasing so few titles each week. Initially they promised us 10 titles a week. Then they lowered it to five. Then they changed it *again* and said 3-5. Now sometimes we are seeing only two titles or – now – just *1* title a week. It’s not like there’s a shortage of things to release. There are enough games for all the supported VC consoles that they could release 10 titles a week for at least 5-10 years before ever running out. There have been somewhat reasonable excuses for why there are no games or support yet for true wii online play. and there were reasons why they had to delay the various channels a while and stagger their release dates. but i can’t think of any good reason why they are not releasing a decent number of VC games each week. and i don’t consider “they want to really milk it for all it’s worth and manipulate people into buying every single title, whether they are great ones or lame ones, rather than offering people the promised selection” a good excuse.

Question remains, does it use the text of the original SNES version or the better uncut GBA one?

According to Google, 900 Japanese yen equals just US$7.42, so Japan still gets it cheaper when you factor in real-life currency.

It’s great to see Nintendo finally release one of their own best games on the VC, even if its only one. Personally, I’ll take this over a slew of titles we really couldn’t care less about. A Link to the Past is a great enough title to stand out on its own, not to mention compared to many other titles currently on the VC, is actually quite a lengthy quest and worth the price of admission alone.

Nintendo really does need to pick up the pace by giving us gamers more titles like Zelda III weekly, but this will do for the time being.
