New PS3 firmware takes electric money

Sony is releasing firmware version 1.50 tomorrow (January 24, 2007) in Japan. This update allows the PS3 to connect with an USB Edy smart card reader. This allows people who use the rechargeable Edy smart cards to scan in their cards to buy stuff off of the Playstation network. Another significant update is the addition of a Korean keyboard. Version 1.50 also has an addition that everyone can get excited about no matter what region you’re in. The upgraded firmware increases the PS3’s backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 titles. No specific games have been announced, but it’s a good sign that Sony hasn’t given up on patching the PS3.
