Here’s a first for TV history, the new Nicktoons show, Skyland, is premiering on Xbox Live. The first episode out of a two part premiere can be downloaded for free until Monday, January 29, 2007. I checked out the show and it wasn’t particularly interesting except for the pseudo cel-shaded artwork. It’s about two children who escape to a pirate hideout leaving behind their mother to become freedom fighters. While the series is going to air on cable TV fans of Skyland can download the entire series before it airs on TV for 160 points ($2) an episode. That’s a brilliant way for Nickelodeon and Microsoft to cash in before the show gets released on DVD. Imagine if Microsoft netted a deal like this for a show like Heroes, a new anime series like Death Note or any other serial show. There is some serious cash to be made here and downloadable content really is the way of the future. There are a bunch of other new movies released from Lionsgate like the Descent and An Incontinent Truth from Paramount are now on the marketplace too.
What would really get the cash flowing in is if Nick and Microsoft scored a deal to air Avatar episodes on the Xbox Live Marketplace, especially if they were from Book 2: Earth. Boxsets for season 2 are still quite far away from getting released in retail stores, making this a quick and easy way for Nick to make a easy dollar on the series before we can even get our hands on the DVD.
