Ever since Mario, Sonic and Rayman conquered the alluring 3rd dimension, the more traditional 2d platformers were sadly confined to the tiny screens of handhelds. Well, not anymore! The PC is now the welcoming home of a new -more dangerous- kind of platformer: the freeware one. Independent Gaming, an excellent blog specializing in free and indy games, has proven the point by compiling a list showing off the Top 10 freeware platformers of 2006. I played some Knytt and for some reason, it reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus. I think it’s the barren world and the feeling of isolation and the sword that homes in on ship parts. There are some NPC characters around, but they don’t really say or do anything.
