Disney Interactive Studios (previously known as Buena Vista Games) has an interesting tactic to hook people into their Pirates of the Caribbean MMORPG. Instead of going for a cash op system or forcing monthly fees when too many games doing that they are giving away the adventure for free, sort of. If you don’t want to give Jack Sparrow your cash you can use “basic access” which lets you play an ad supported version of the game. Once you get your feet wet you can switch over to unlimited access for $9.95 a month which removes the ads and adds in customization features. The system lets people try out the game without having to initially invest in it. If you find yourself getting attached to your pirate avatar and dream of plundering treasure you can upgrade your account. If not you can casually play the game when you have an urge to fight skeleton pirates or hang out with Jack Sparrow’s virtual avatar.
