While Xbox Live Arcade has been used mainly for casual games and arcade ports there is no reason why it couldn’t be used as a platform for deeper games, especially since the size per game has increased. During the blogger’s breakfast I forgot to mention that I asked Aaron Greenberg if there was the possibility of RPGs distributed over Xbox Live Arcade and he gave a sure why not kind of response. Afterwards he mentioned Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as a step in the right direction, even though it isn’t really a RPG. The reason I asked the question is because Microsoft is serious about making the Xbox 360 a system for RPG gamers. Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Fable 2 are in the works and if you count all of Idea Factory’s ports in Japan the 360 has the most RPGs on any “next-gen” console. However the genre is notably absent in Xbox Live arcade, which has been home to action games and cringe Root Beer Tapper. The Mana series seems like a perfect fit Live Arcade. Who wouldn’t buy tweaked port of Secret of Mana with online play? Suikoden would be another good addition, since it’s hard to find and has an ardent fanbase. There’s also a sliver of hope that it could be a candidate since Microsoft already has a relationship with Konami. Are there any RPGs you would buy over Xbox Live Arcade?
An action RPG like Secret of Mana that stresses teamwork through co-op would be a perfect fit for XBLA as long as it came with online play. Microsoft has been really going all out with classic titles getting the online treatment to build more connectivity with old school gamers, and there’s no better way to attract RPG players than to start off with SOM.
Puzzlequest will be coming to XBLA eventually. That’s the Puzzle/RPG from the makers of Warlords which is due out next week on the PSP and DS. the 360 and PC versions haven’t been formally announced, but the developer has mentioned them.
And of course, SOTN is coming. That’s basically an action-RPG.
I don’t know how realistic this is, with size limitations and all, but if I was an indie developer trying to make a game for XBLA, I’d make something along the lines of Diablo 2. That genre has never been exploited well enough on console (with online gameplay), and it needn’t be nearly as epic to get a ridiculous amount of people playing.

I would instantly buy Secret of Evermore, Shadowrun (the snes RPG), and of course chrono trigger.
