Advent Children rip off or tribute? You decide

By Spencer . March 13, 2007 . 8:36am

IceAmp sends us a tip that Korean singer Ivy’s new song “Sonata of Temptation” clones Tifa’s fight scene from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children with actors instead of CG. On one hand Final Fantasy fans might be upset that the music video leeches of Square-Enix’s successful movie, but Ivy couldn’t leech off Advent Children if it wasn’t so popular. Isn’t imitation is the greatest form of flattery?

The song is pretty awful (not familiar w/ Korean music)… once again proves that live action and video games never mixed, even though this looks better than Van Damme’s SF2.

I’d have to agree that the song leaves a bit to be desired (though compared to other K-Pop, it’s pretty standard and terribly Gwen Stefani-ish), but I’d have to say the video itself was pretty well done. I mean I doubt SquEnix would allow something like that to be done if they saw it to be horribly flawed.

Then again, if it was done without SquEnix’s consent (which I highly doubt), I smell a delicious lawsuit waiting to happen.

Louise Says:

Wow the song was definitely…not good. Interesting seeing the live action version of this though.

RowD Says:

Meh, the song was okay… To me, this just proves to me that the super-fast super-complicated action sequences in Advent Children didn’t have a chance of being able to be pulled off in live-action, but this is a pretty good try. Heh, funny; who’d ever think we’d be looking at CG and comparing live-action unfavourably towards it? :D Shows how much has changed in the past few years…

khy Says:

would be silly to think they could get away with it. so most likely a tribute. god awful song though.

Icupnimpn2 Says:

You can see text at the bottom of the screen in the beginning of the video that says it’s a remake of scenes from Advent Children. My monopoly money says this was done with the knowledge of Squeeeenix.

The attribution message occurs during the part of the song where the guy says “Ey Ey Ey Look at the hottie ya’ll! Do you know her?”

ShadowMarth Says:

That was a terrible song.

BurntToast256 Says:

I don’t think it’s bad… but being a native Korean, I don’t even understand the words. Like, I get some lines here and there, but the way it’s being sung I can’t make out most of the song… unless it’s an English line.

I don’t think the song is THAT bad… but the action part of the video isn’t bad at all. I think it’s done quite well.

Iwata Says:

That was a pretty 1337 music video. Very nicely done.
