After the Dreamcast dies shmups rise

By Spencer . March 20, 2007 . 9:26am

Now that Karous is out the Dreamcast release schedule is dormant again, but after its "death" the Dreamcast has become the de facto system for shmups. Kurt Kalata who  maintains Hardcore Gaming 101 (and also writes for Siliconera) takes a look back at a sizeable list of shmups starting with Border Down, which has branching paths depending on how many times you get killed. While the Dreamcast has more than its fair share of shmups many of these have been ported to other consoles. Radiligy and Chaos Field are on the Cube, Psyvariar 2 made it to the Playstation 2 and the Castle Shikigami 2 is on every system under the sun. It’s the final four shooters that are still Dreamcast exclusives: Under Defeat, Last Hope, Trigger Heart Exelica and Karous. Any publishers want to port these to the “Wii compatible” Gamecube?

Nice rhyming title and article! A good read, takes me back to a time when I originally imported and played these late Dreamcast shmups.

One must remember though, that all of these shooters were released not only on a console no longer in production but many by smaller developers. They can’t really publish as many copies as a big name developer, not to mention I think a lot of these post-modern DC shmups get many of their charm by being released at a first come, first serve basis.
