Both Lunar games are good examples of what it is you're talking about (The problem with turn based is that it’s really hard to implement in a way that your ability to win isn’t directly tied to your level) since the monsters in both Lunar game level up alongside you, at least until you reach level 55 and up where monsters stop levelling up with you. From level 55 down, you essentially had to rely on really good strategy to get you through those tough boss battles because levels alone did nothing for you.

I'm all for chess-like combat. That's why I like strategy RPGs. The problem with turn based is that it's really hard to implement in a way that your ability to win isn't directly tied to your level. Only a few RPGs have ever managed to put actual strategy into turn based RPG combat. A few Shin Megami Tensei games and FFV, and that's about it. I guess you could make an argument for Lufia II if it weren't so easy.

Level 5 games are especially bad in this regard. Their turn based games are incredibly repetitious and dull, especially considering the length of their dungeons and their insane encounter rates.

I guess Dragon Quest IX should be turn based from a purism standpoint, but they at least need to make enough changes to make the battles actually fun for once.
