Nintendo marketing maxims: Wii and DS

You may perceive your Nintendo DS as a handheld system where you can hop online and play Mario Kart DS against the world, but Nintendo has a slightly different outlook on what the DS is. During Nintendo’s 67th Financial Results Briefing, Satoru Iwata (president of Nintendo) mentioned the Nintendo DS "should not be considered simply a gaming machine.” Instead Nintendo has a new idea for the DS as seen in one of the slides from the presentation.

Nintendo has been pushing the concept of enrichment with the DS with the Touch Generations series of software like Brain Age and English Training. Third party publishers like Square-Enix (DS Style) and Electronic Arts (sake and wine guides) are publishing software with a similar concept too. Do you think this is a good idea for the DS? Or is it better as a touch screen gaming system?

Past the break is another slide from the briefing with Nintendo’s concept for the Wii.

I hate how Nintendo makes their product to be some kind of Kool-Aid. Gamers are a lot more maturer and smarter then Nintendo makes out to be.

I think it’s good to see a different approach to gaming. We’re far away from the stupidity of Halo.

I’m all for nintendo expanding the usefulness of the ds. Its great as a gaming machine and it is obviously capable of much more. Lets see what people can come up with.

It may not sound like much for the English-speaking folk, but those pesky Japanese have travel guides, Chinese\Korean\English learning software, cook-books, yoga lessons (yeah, I know X| ) and lot’s other interactive multimedia courses you would usually fond on the PC.

And don’t forget the Opera browser!

You’d be surprised to know how many people play only Brain Age and Sudoku on their DS :)
