It hadn’t occurred to me, until a friend of mine reminded me, that yesterday (April 30th) marked 9 years since Panzer Dragoon Saga was released here in the United States on the already dying Sega Saturn. With 30,000 copies only shipped to the United States, Panzer Dragoon Saga instantly became a title that everyone almost had to own because of the glamour and splendor that surrounded the game aside from its Panzer Dragoon name.
Panzer Dragoon Saga was something different in the RPG genre; as opposed to the traditional turn-based RPG archetype, Panzer Dragoon Saga took the rail shooting aspect of the original Panzer Dragoon games and made it into something that tied into an RPG structure with the player selecting commands that were expected of a rail shooter. Even the game’s soundtrack, considered by many fans to be one of the greatest soundtracks ever composed, managed to captivate the grandoise splender of Panzer Dragoon Saga alongside its epic story of a young man’s desire to redeem his fallen comrades. To this very day, Panzer Dragoon Saga manages to send mixed emotional waves down my spine as it did the very first time I finished it. That’s what some would argue to be the true testament of a great game, and I very much share that same sentiment.
What do you remember most about Panzer Dragoon Saga? Did you ever own the game? Did you regret never purchasing it? Share your memories about this great RPG.
What i remember? wow I’ve been a Panzer’s fan ever since the first that came out on with the Saturn! Got every one of them, even JP and Bootleg version of Saga! lol Orta was a great play but still can’t compare to the old I think. I love the video posted here, great memories! What I remember most about saga? The boss battles from the old! Specially the scene with the revival of Panzer Dragoon 2’s last boss! That was epic! Oh! and the hunt to get the true blue dragon too
They need to Virtual Console it! ![]()
I played Panzer Dragoon Saga for the first time earlier this year. It’s incredibly atmospheric, despite the low-res graphics… the colour palette they used and the soundtrack, it all adds up to a very charming game. My favourite parts are actually the CG cut-scenes, a bit dated in the visual department but the direction is stunning - beats a hell of a lot of PS2 generation RPG cutscenes for emotional intensity and use of music. Oh and can’t forget about the fighting system, despite a relatively small bestiary of enemies the battles never become repetitive - when a battle started you have to be awake, no button mashing… I can’t believe in this day and age there are RPGs still being released with arcaic battle-systems… Panzer Dragoon Saga was way ahead of its time.
One of the most immersive RPG experiences of my entire life. I remember receiving this game at the same time as Shining Force III from the now defunct BuyRite games. As long as I play videogames, I will never part with this title. It is worth more than any premium offered for it on eBay.
I only own the import version as a used copy was relatively easy to find on ebay w/o costing an arm and a leg. The game was definitely one of the deepest RPGs in terms of of gameplay and story, and a great game for the Saturn. Imagine a next gen Panzer Dragoon RPG w/ graphics beyond Orta for the360, that would be unbelievable.
Heh, I bought this at TRU waaaaay back in the day when they had loads for them for $19.99 each. What a reat game! It seemed so setup for a follow-up… what happened?!?!
That’s it, an RPG that can’t be matched. I got this game in the uk when it came out, and loved every minute of it! Because it was a movie like feel to it. e.g. when you watch a good movie you like, you don’t mind seeing all over again!
Right! the game was base on the life of a dragon rider (more on a partnership) were you had to work with your dragon to understand the weakness and streanghs, and i played this game 16 times to find out the different thing i could do and try collect everything in the game to! i had a blasted doing that, but i was unable to become to the legendary Light Wing or Solo Wing (sigh!), in the end when i got the internet i got a walk though to become them so i completed another 24 times. The thing that nearly killed me was the fact i was so close to becoming Solo Wing, i had 11 D-units and i couldn’t find the last one until i used the walk though. anyway as you can see I love this game to bits. some people the FF games are the best, and yes that’s true….. for them. and there are others that a good too. but for me Panzer Dragoon Saga was and is my Best RPG to Date. The real said thing is i want the next panzer RPG but i don’t want the to F~@K it up like the last sonic game( i mean the sega music is great but the game was to bug-ie to defend). Last note on Panzer Dragoon saga you will be missed….. Nah you won’t I’m going to play you right now, c ya Panzer fans.

I just bought Panzer Dragoon Orta three days ago now that they’ve added it to the BC list for 360. Still need to get myself a Saturn though, I’ve never played any Saturn games, with the exception of a Nights demo once at a Toys R Us. I look forward to one day picking on up. Happy B-day, Panzer Dragoon!
