Retro Revival: Spider Man on the 2600

While North America is getting ready to see Spider Man 3 this weekend and some fans are drooling over Treyarch’s “next-gen” Spider Man game, I’m reminded of the first Spider Man video game made by Parker Brothers for the Atari 2600. For an Atari game Spider Man doesn’t look that bad, you can actually distinguish the Marvel hero in his traditional red and blue costume. The goal of the game is to climb the yellow building and diffuse the bomb. Spider Man can shoot web and pull himself up or swing side to side to catch criminals before they cut his web line to the building. Sure, the game is dated and it isn’t more complicated than a portable Tiger Electronic handheld, but what more can you expect from an Atari 2600 game?

  • I was such a big fan of this game back in my younger days! Thanks for the childhood reminder :)

  • Wow, I still have that game! I used to play it a lot when I was a kid. The later levels could be really tough, especially with a limited amount of web to use.

Even on the 2600, Spider-Man didn’t let those console limitations get in the way of the fun factor. When you think about it, it’s great to see how far Spidey has come in the video game industry, his games have always held a higher degree of quality compared to other comic book super heroes out there.

Superman and Batman immediately spring to my mind, for instance, although in Batman’s case most games are either on or off in quality (the spectacular Batman for the NES or the recently disappointing Batman Begins).

I had this game, probably one the best games of the 2600 if not the best, much better than the 2600 version of donkey kong.
