No surprise here, no Starcraft II this year

There is a really good interview up on MSNBC with Rob Pardo, vice president of game design at Blizzard about Starcraft II. As usual Blizzard is sticking to their usual “It’ll ship when it’s ready” philosophy and it is definitely not coming out in 2007. That’s fine by me, I would much rather wait for a polished Blizzard product than have it (zerg?) rushed out the door.

Besides the release information in the interview it was revealed that Starcraft II has been in development since 2003 and in full development starting in 2004. No wonder the trailer from their Korea event looked so refined, Starcraft II already had a good three to four years of work put into it. All the way on the third page of the talk Blizzard crushes rumors about a fourth race.

No fourth race. We talked a lot about it. We ultimately decided we wanted to focus on the three races we had.

Now that’s what I like about Blizzard, I wonder how long they’ve had Diablo 3 “secretly” in development. They’re the kind of company that will release games only when its ready, always completely supporting the game 100% with updates and batches.

I had a feeling Starcraft II wouldn’t be released this year, but whenever we get out hands on this RTS it’s going to be nothing short of spectacular, judging from recent info, screens, and trailers for the title.
