Flying into retail stores tomorrow, The Adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3

smb3dvd.jpgAfter a successful run of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, DiC dropped the live action segments for the Adventures of Super Mario Brothers. The cartoon only series is set in the Super Mario Brothers 3 timeline (complete with raccoon tail power-ups!), but there are some differences. The most notable change is the names of Bowser’s Koopalings. Morton, Koopaling from the second stage was called Bigmouth Koopa and Ludwig von Koopa got named Kooky Von Koopa. Also Mario appears in the “real world” on more than one occasion to foil King Koopa’s plots. Who would have thought Koopa wants to conquer Earth too? Continuity differences aside I have some fond memories of the series and it might be worth checking out again when the DVDs hit stores tomorrow.

On top of the 26 fifteen minute episodes Shout Factory is adding in a bonus disc with the backstory of the Adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3, concept art and an interactive writer’s bible as seen in the DVD trailer. If you want to take a longer walk down memory lane see the opening and a clip from the show.

I still remember the first I saw the show. I was at my grandmothers house eating pancakes, DYING to see the first episode. My grandmother told me “no”. I pratically cried, and she said” If that darn video game guy means that much, go ahead”.

Well, that “darn video game guy” still does mean that much to me. Any one else got fond memories of this cartoon?

i have *many* fond memories watching this cartoon! it was on nbc saturday morning, along with captain n and camp candy. i remember going to toys ‘r’ us, because if you watched nbc and remembered a secret keyword, they gave you a prize pack of some kind.

super mario brothers 3 is still my favorite of all the mario games, although truthfully, i watched two episodes of the cartoon again recently and it doesn’t hold up nearly as well as captain n or the super mario brothers super show (also, keep in mind that my standards for “holding up” are ridiculously low).

but an interactive writer’s bible is an amazing special feature. perhaps i’ll netflix it.
