Japan gets Paper Mario on the virtual console this week and…

papermario.jpgShining Force. Way before strategy RPGs became big business in North America, Sega gambled by localizing Shining Force. Considering the popularity of S-RPGs now, Sega was ahead of the times. Shining Force might seem archaic compared to Disgaea, but for 700 Wii Points* (it will probably be priced at 800 outside of Japan) it is a steal. Shining Force has been confirmed for the USA and if we’re lucky it will be on the Virtual Console this Monday.

I’m pretty sure most of you know about Paper Mario (aka Mario Story in Japan). In case you didn’t it’s the progeny of the Paper Mario series developed by Intelligent Systems and a pseudo follow up to Super Mario RPG. Mario’s quest begins after Bowser heads up to Star Haven and pilfers the Star Rod. Using the power of the rod Bowser becomes invincible and kidnaps Princess Peach. Only the power of the seven star spirits and a new cast of friends foil Bowser’s plans.

Choosing only one is tough, which would you pick? Oh yeah there are two other games coming out this week too. Makai Hakkenden Shada, which looks like an RPG and Militia better known as Metal Marines from Namco Bandai.

Coming out on July 10:

Militia (Super Famicom // 800 Points)

Paper Mario (Nintendo 64 // 1000 Points)

Shining Force (Sega Genesis // 700 Points)

Makai Hakkenden Shada (PC Engine // 600 Points)

Wow…I been waiting for Paper Mario to hit the VC I never got a chance to complete it and it will most likely be my first N64 VC purchase.

As for Shining Force, I’ll probably pass on it, was never a big fan of the series. To be honest I never played them, played the remake for a bit (I think it was) on the GBA, but it wasn’t enough to pull me in.

It’s great that they keep the N64 train going, just wish they would get off their lazy ass and implement rumble feature. I’d buy all the N64 VC games if they would do so.

I’m with you on that one. The only thing that prevented me from buying Star Fox 64 on the VC happened to deal with the absence of rumble. Thinking back to 1997 when that was such a touted feature from Nintendo during its release and now seeing it cut altogether is a disgrace to everything the Rumble Pak stood for.

If Nintendo were really going for accuracy with their future N64 ports, this is something that simply should not be overlooked, no matter how small or insignificant they may think it is.

Amen to that brother!
