Jack Tretton talks about the PS3 price cut

By Spencer . July 9, 2007 . 1:11pm

I was watching this interview on CNBC earlier today, but I missed out on recording it. Good thing someone else did and Game | Life found it on YouTube. Jack Tretton, the new CEO of SCEA, answers some hard hitting questions about PS3 sales like why is Sony dropping the price. Tretton focuses on the ten year lifecycle of the Playstation 3 and mentions that the Playstation 2 should sell an additional ten million units this year. The PsOne lived for ten years and with games continually being released for the Playstation 2, the PS2 is on target to have a similar lifespan. However, the Playstation 3 is an entirely different beast and the PS3 is off to a rocky start on its ten year journey.

Never heard of this Bill guy, but I like him already :P

As for Jack Tretton, I could smell his bullshit and sweat coming out of my monitor.

I’m sorry, and you are?

Interesting when you look at how long it took them to drop the prices on the PS2 to $120 and the PSP.

Good point. I just checked Wiki, here’s the break down:

* US$299.99 (October 26, 2000, release date) (CAD$449.99)
* US$199.99 (May 14, 2002) (CAD$299.99)
* US$179.99 (May 13, 2003, “temporary” pricing) (CAD$249.99)[2]
* US$179.99 (August 18, 2003, official pricing)[3]
* US$149.99 (May 11, 2004) (CAD$179.99)
* US$129.99 (April 20, 2006) (CAD$139.99)

Took them over a 1 & 1/2 year to chip out $100 out of the price. 5 &1/2 year to bring it down to it’s current price.

Get over yourself.

And who are you? Man, is it a full moon tonight or something?

lol, the Bill dude was giving Jack Tretton such a hard time, being the big boss is never easy.. well, the questions are natural, I mean a price drop so soon.

But w/ the console sales of Wii to PS3 in Jpn being 6 to 1 right now, this is not a bad move by Sony, even if it means losing a little money in the beginning, I’m sure things will pick up when more good games are out. 360 is not doing so hot either in terms of profit. Man, the brutal reality of stocks…

Anyone ever wondered how much the PS3 would have been without Blue-Ray? Do you think SONY could have released it for $299 US with everything but Blue-Ray (using regular DVDs like XBOX360). I’m curious to know how much people are paying for the Blue-Ray technology in that system.
