What? Wii ads appear in Wave Race 64?

You may be scratching your head wondering how ads for future consoles are in a Nintendo 64 game. Did Nintendo predict the future? Nah. It's a graphic swap. The original version had ads for Kawasaki, but since Nintendo doesn’t have the license anymore they had to alter the game. As you can see they replaced the banners with ads for the Wii and the Nintendo DS Lite (picture past the break).

While this is a minor change it shows Nintendo is capable of altering the rom data for the virtual console releases if they please. Here’s a tantalizing thought: Treasure’s Sin and Punishment on the US virtual Console. The game already has English voiceovers and the other edits are minor. All Nintendo has to do is create a new splash screen, switch the menu text to English and maybe remove the Japanese subtitles to bring it to the rest of the world.

  • Dude US N64, NES, and SNES game’s are programed slightly different than Japanese consoles.

Which is why sin and punishment runs just fine on my US 64.

  • @Kuefler – its true text compression is different, but Nintendo made the image swap for both the US and Japanese (pictured) versions of the game. It’s just a thought, but Sin & Punishment wouldn’t be that hard to transfer either, axe the subtitles and swap the screens.

I dont get it, isn’t the point of ads to get people to buy the product? If they’re playing Wave Race on the VC, doesn’t it mean they have a Wii already? I dont know, I just think it’d be smarter to advertize a new game or something.

Bah! Its a shame Nintendo couldn’t get the license, the Kawasaki ads, in my opinion, added to the overall feel of the game – in the sense it was like a waterski sports event one would see on ESPN. Ohhh well.

Why bother getting this game anyway, the game cube version piszed all over it. That can be bought on ebay pretty cheap

Chances are you or anyone will read this, but whatever, learn2read. It says they no longer have the Kawasaki license. You know, the vehicles they happen to be driving in the game?
