Arkanoid DS and the paddle controller

By Spencer . August 8, 2007 . 10:22am

Bundled with of Arkanoid DS is an arcade like controller where you spin a knob to move your ship. The device is similar to the NES Arkanoid controller, which is now a collector’s item (pictured on the right). Why is this notable?

First, it’s Arkanoid! Second, Taito is going to go down in history as the first third party developer to use the GBA slot for a special controller. Props to them for thinking outside of the box and I hope more developers take advantage of the GBA slot to add features to the DS. If you want to get the controller and Arkanoid DS you can purchase a bundle pack for 5,040 yen ($42) or pick up the game alone for 3,990 yen ($33). Nine bucks more for a special controller that replicates the arcade game sounds like a fair deal. Both versions and a standalone controller, if you made the mistake of buying the game only, are scheduled to come out on December 6 in Japan.

  • wow, pretty neat.

  • What about that Mag Boy Nintendo game that was announced a while back? Doesn’t that plug into the GBA slot?

Anyway, This looks sweet. A definite import.

  • Oops, should have read the article closer. You clearly said “third party.”

  • hi, i saw the arkanoid ds game on IGN this morning, put it into my amazon wish list with the intent of buying it soon. It is released in the US in 7 more days, and I just learned that in Japan there is a paddle that can be used with the game. IGN said that it’s a wonderful accessory that can be even used with other games. I want to buy one. Obviously I need to order it from somewhere in Asia, unless I can find someone that are auctioning them on ebay from the US. I saw the bundle set (game and paddle) for about $50 US dollars. But every set I see is in Japanese, meaning the text isn’t in English. I need English. =) Although I’ve been to Japan, I definitely can’t read or speak it. Do you know vendors that I can get the paddle from. I think it’s about $20. Hopefully someone with cheaper shipping, maybe mark the package as a gift on the customs form, and has a black paddle. I have the February 2008 NDS (cobalt/black). I do love the color pink, but I’m just being too much of a girl. my sony head phones are even cobalt to match. i’ve got to stick to the color scheme. =) Thank you so much for any help you can provide and your time. Have a great day. – Nicole
