Confirmed: US Freeloader not working in US Wiis

By Spencer . August 8, 2007 . 12:10am

freelwii.jpgAfter reading the disheartening report about the Freeloader I went to check if this wasn't a region problem. I put my version 1.0 US Freeloader in my US Wii and got the same error message. Did Nintendo purposely void the Freeloader? I'm not so sure about that, but there are some mod chips that require configuration discs. Nintendo may have been trying to foil those devices. However, inadvertently (or adventively?) the Freeloader's dual boot method does not work anymore. Has anyone tried one of the new "Wii Friendly" Freeloaders? If those don't work I guess it's time to dust off your Gamecube if you want to play Battle Stadium D.O.N. or other imports.

Probably the biggest downside to the news is if Datel is working on a Wii Freeloader, Nintendo has shown the have the power to disable the device at anytime.

Ahh, the downside of updatable firmware. I’m all for combating piracy, but come on. Let us play our damn imports. I don’t see why the system has to be region-locked in the first place.

Give Nintendo back their 1st place, and they start acting like their old self again. Shame on them :(

Saying Nintendo disable the US freeloader on purpose isn’t really far fetched:
    - All European freeloaders didn’t work on PAL Wiis
    - Datel released another freeloader for Europe, compatible with the Wii. However, yesterday’s update disable this freeloader as well

Considering that the GameCube is pretty much dead, I think it was simply a side effect of disabling certain mod-chips or disabling the Action Replay (Nintendo is trying to prevent cheating Online).

Anyone know if this disables Wiis that have modchips that don’t require configuation discs? I bought a Wii in Japan, and had it modified in HK when I realized I wanted a way to play US (domestic) games.

My freeloader is still working, maybe I haven’t gotten the latest update yet? (I don’t turn on the 24 hr standby on my Wii). If the latest update is disabling it, that sucks. I really don’t want to dig out the old cube just to play those handful of imports, but I still haven’t finished Baten Kaitos and Origin yet.

100% agree with EvliAkito, the region lock is not the best idea
