Cooking Mama cooks up cash

cookingmamac.jpgAh! Now, it’s crystal clear why Majesco is excited about Cooking Mama 2: Dinner with Friends. The first game shipped over half a million copies in less than a year. Compared to the critically acclaimed Psychonauts, Cooking Mama is a mega hit. Psychonauts didn’t even make the 100,000 milestone. I never thought Cooking Mama would be this big, but this niche title found a mainstream audience.

Cooking Mama 2 for the DS is due out in Majesco’s first fiscal quarter, which means March 2008-ish. The Wii follow up is coming to North America in the spring. Neither game has been announced where Cooking Mama originated, Japan.

This is bad.

Now it’s not just Nintendo who’s getting hooked on the crappy mini-game compilation bug, the third parties are being trained to do so, as well.

Why make critically acclaimed games when you can shovel out crapware on to the Wii and DS and move 100,000 units?

I’d have to partially disagree with that statement. You can’t take this one particular company’s game and generalize it across the board.

It does seem that it’s easier to make a compilation of mini-games and pass them out at $19.99 a pop than a full blown triple A title for $50+, but it doesn’t mean that these kinds of games should stop being made.

I personally enjoy the game and a game I can pick up for 15 minutes when I’m waiting for the train.

Besides, no one is force feeding you anything and you don’t have to buy it if you don’t want it. Majesco in this case took a chance with Cooking Mama, like they did with Psychonauts, and I applaud them for both efforts.

Mr. Shen:

Cooking Mama Wii wasn’t $19.99. It was $50.

Don’t play the “nobody’s forcing you to buy anything” card. That’s a flawed argument. As soon as these games seem to pick up traction (before the public gets bored of them) development on the games that I want to play will cease as companies like Majesco try and cash in. When that starts occuring, I will have no buying choice anymore.

If you don’t believe me, just look at Nintendo canning Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and repurposing the staff to make casual games.

I think they’re referring to Cooking Mama DS, which has shipped 500,000 units since last September. I have no idea about the Wii version… which, well, wasn’t very good. So I still stand by the $20.00 mark, which is what it was.

Granted it’s a shame that Nintendo canceled Project HAMMER, but it doesn’t mean they shifted all their resources to make only mini-game compilations.

And I think it’s a bit early to be worried about having “no buying choice”. There will always be a game to play and look forward to. That’s why indie games have gotten so huge as of late.

Pichi Says:

They are talking about Cooking Mama DS selling the 500,000 copies.

I agree with you Mr. Shen!

I’m looking foward to Cooming Mama 2 DS, seems like more good fun.

Spencer Says:

Clarification time: Yeah I was mentioning Cooking Mama for the DS only since that was the first one. Cooking Mama: Cook Off is technically the second one even though Cooking Mama 2 is on the DS. Confusing!

SomeDude Says:

Mr. Shen:

Not every non-casual game is one I want to play. I don’t honestly care about Zelda or Smash Bros. If the number of the non-casual titles out there is decreasing that’s a bad thing for me.

Maybe “no buying choice” won’t happen, but a significantly shrinking buying choice is not by any means a good thing in my book.

On top of that, I really hated Cooking Mama.
