The origin of this special edition Atari 2600 are unknown, even to the person holding the auction. Although s/he speculates that the gold plated Atari may have been a milestone system to celebrate the ten millionth sold console. I doubt we will ever discover the story behind the one-of-a-kind Atari, but it is a representation of Atari’s long gone golden days. Once they were the king of consoles. Then E.T. came and the hardware maker went into a downwards spiral. Now you can purchase their shining symbol of success for under a hundred bucks.
@Tony - the front panel is supposedly gold plated and it looks like the reflection of light is making the gold panel look like faux wood. The regular 2600s have a wooden panel.

I’m confused… what is gold plated on it? The front almost looks like faux wood.
