Step into the mana forest, meet Eco Creatures

Since Majesco announced Eco Creatures: Save the Forest yesterday it’s time to start talking about the Japanese version Ecolis. In the game you play as Durian, the orange protector who is aptly named after the spiky fruit. In the first mission you get the hang of controlling Durian. You can move him around by dragging the stylus on the touch screen, but this isn’t the optimal way of playing the game. A better option is to tap the bottom right hand corner of the screen and move into Ecolis controlling mode. When you switch control schemes you make Durian walk around with the D-pad and the friendly pink Ecolis can be controlled with the stylus. You can draw a circle around a group to select them then draw a straight line forward to make them move.

The Ecolis automatically attack any threats nearby, which includes tree cutting robots. In the early missions you only have a few Ecolis to command, not nearly enough to try to flank the robots or pull of any tricky maneuvers. The missions are simple you hit the robots head on and poke the base tree to regenerate the lost warriors. If the central tree gets chopped up it’s game over.

While all the action is going on Durian is still on the screen, similar to how Captain Olimar walks with his Pikmin. However, Durian is extremely weak. If he gets hit by the robots two or three times he is teleported back to the main tree. Durian can defend himself by casting lightning on a group of robots. Lightning is the first spell you get, but you have to have enough energy to cast it. Since a single usage drains the meter Durian is defenseless after one attack. The trick is to make Durian run in circles while you call on your Ecolis to engage the enemy.

While I get back to rounding up Ecolis and Ecoby check out Ecolis’ intro video.
