Learn New Abilities in FFIV DS

In the original version of Final Fantasy IV, each of your party members all had unique abilities that were likened to them and only them. Palom and Porom had Twin Magic, Edward had Sing, Rosa had Prayer and Cecil had Dark Wave, and so on and so forth. I'm sure you've often wondered what it'd be like if, say, Cecil could use Sing or Rosa and Rydia could use Twin Magic. What if I told you that you could be able to do that in the FFIV DS remake? Shocked?

Whatever your reaction may be, the fact of the matter is I'm telling the truth! In the most recent Jump magazine scan, it is revealed that one of the newer features to grace the Final Fantasy IV DS remake is the ability of your (main) party members to inherit the abilities of former party members. As I mentioned above, it is possible for Cecil to inherit Edward's Sing ability as well as Palom & Porom's Twin Magic ability as evidenced in the scan below. This makes things a bit interesting as it allows you the ability to customize your characters with skills that highly benefited you from previous party members, though I don't know how much you benefited from Edward's singing.

This main new feature  of the game seems very promising; but what I'm more interested in knowing is whether or not you'll have the ability to replace your party members with those former party members towards the end game as you could in the GBA port of Final Fantasy IV. I enjoyed taking Palom & Porom with me to the final battle.

Guuuuh Rydia is HOT. Wait, how old is she supposed to be?

  • Nightcap

Eh, not so fond of this. I hated that in the later FFs everyone could learn everything, it really takes away from the characters, how sad that they decided to put that crap in IV. I suppose its not so bad if its only magic that everyone can learn, but theres no point in having different characters if everyone can can do the same thing.

  • Dr. Slump

I agree with the above comment. In FF8, every character is effectively identical in battle, so it doesn’t matter who you choose to bring with you. In contrast, FF4 requires you to think strategically using the characters you have at any particular point. Having said that, we should suspend judgment on this new feature until we see how it’s implemented.

  • Teknoman

Well with FFVIII you could kinda limit yourself and sorta “design” the character skills the way you want. Then again you’re right about the whole “making everyone the same” ability in the game as well. Maybe it only works with characters who are out of commision?

“Well with FFVIII you could kinda limit yourself and sorta “design” the character skills the way you want.”

True. Yeah, you could make the characters very similar, but you could also customize each character’s stats, and give them different magics and summons, which in the end creates vastly different characters.

Well, characters will STILL be unique in this remake. Only the MAIN playable characters can inherit abilities. This means that only Cecil will be able to send Dark Wave and have Palading skills; only Cain will have the ability to jump, etc.

    @jeffx

She is young when you first meet her. I think about 6 or so…
Soon after that, she is swallowed by leviathan and enters to a realm where time passes more swiftly.

When you meet up with her the second time, she is an adult, and apparently quite attractive…

Seeing this makes me think we won’t have the ability to switch out characters at the end like FFIV Advance. What would be the point of giving one of the characters one of those abilities if you could just put them in your party later. I don’t think we’ll be taking those people with us to the last battle….hope I’m wrong.

    > In contrast, FF4 requires you to think strategically using the characters you have at any particular point.

Er, you weren’t able to change your cast throughout FFIV, it was fixed.

Don’t like it really. It just doesn’t make any sense to me to have someone other then twins learn twin magic.

  • Guido

    > Don’t like it really. It just doesn’t make any sense to me to have someone other then twins learn twin magic.

Then don’t learn it! It’s an optional feature. Heck, it will probably just be a gimmick that really won’t be that helpful to anything (Cecil with Sing? lol, useless).

  • Dr. Slump

    > Er, you weren’t able to change your cast throughout FFIV, it was fixed.

Precisely my point. You’re stuck with certain characters, and you have to find a way to use them strategically.

This makes me think a little of the Sphere Grid from FFX which personally I loved – everyone started off unique and as the game went on they started to bleed into each other’s abilities. I don’t know how useful it will be but it could potentially be useful. And if you don’t like it, you can just over look it. As someone above said, it doesn’t look like you’re going to be forced to give Cecil Sing.

if you really want to know, I am playing the game right now in japanese. There are radom ability items that can be found throughout the world (little flashy areas). one of them gives you the ability to cast double magic another increases the amount of gil you get after a battle. In this remake EVERYTHING is amazingly harder. this is the hardest FF game I have played (te only ff game I have yet to beat is the ff tactics 2 and some of the early ff games on gameboy)
it is actually hard to get these extra abilities too. You can give them to anybody though, even the people that leave your party. The reward for giving a person who leaves your party an ability or two is better abilities when that charater leaves the party! like the twins give you double magic and tellah gives you a few things one of them cuts spell casting time!
