Introducing the Kingdom Hears trio

By Spencer . September 19, 2007 . 11:04pm

khstock.jpgInside Square-Enix's closed theater they showed trailers for three new titles in the Kingdom Hearts series.

The first trailer was for Kingdom Hearts Coded, a mobile phone game. The trailer began with two books and one said "We must return to free them from torment" on the last page. Jiminy Cricket runs over to Mickey with the book and the screen flashes to Destiny Island with Sora wearing his original costume. Now a look at the battle system, which looks just like a lower resolution Kingdom Hearts except for a debugging mode which makes a bunch of cubes appear.

Next trailer.

Sora enters Naimie's cocoon grasping the Oathkeeper. "The time of the other side…" flashes on the screen. Roxas takes center stage wearing his Organization XIII cloak and he is talking to Axel. Ah! This is going to be a Roxas spin off where you get to play in between Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II.

Some gameplay footage flashes on the screen. It's in 3D… Wait… Four player mode! Roxas, Axel and two other Organization XIII members are fightng shadows together. Now we're in the Organization XIII meeting room (FMV sequence) and a new member comes in. The face is covered by the hoodie, but she appears to be female. I'm taking a guess here by her(?) pinkish lips alone.

This game is for the DS and the title is Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Next Kingdom Hearts trailer begins with the first game played in reverse. "The distant past…" headlines the game. I think you know where we are going with this. We're in Hallow Bastion now and there is a new character who looks sort of like Laguna with spikier hair. He's wearing a blue shirt and he is talking to Roxas. The "villian" from the KH 2: Final Mix + ending pops up casting spells. Good thing the new hero has a keyblade!

Gameplay time. The hero is fighting blue creatures that are not shadows. On the left side of the screen there is a rotating menu that lets the hero select spells and special attacks.

Now the hero in blue is on Destiny Islands looking at a young Sora and Riku fighting with sticks. The prequel spinoff is for the PSP and it's called Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.

Remember the scan we showed earlier? The picture where Mickey is holing the Starry Night keyblade is from Birth by Sleep.

So we get a spin off, a tie in and a prequel? Jeesh.

I totally hate the idea of square enix making some games for Mobile phone, Especially with before crisis : FF7, Parasite eve 3, and this Kingdom hearts coded game.
    GRRRR

I’m interested in Squenix’s mobile games. It’s just too bad the NA market hasn’t embraced mobile games like the Japanese. I’d love to play Before Crisis, but I doubt I ever will. I’m also curious about that cell phone game from Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation. Anyways, I think the “hero in blue” looks more like Zack Fair then Laguna. I actually thought it was Zack when I first saw that scan.

at least there’s no PS3 version like rummored, that would be ridiculous

  • Alexander

“at least there’s no PS3 version like rummored, that would be ridiculous”

No it wouldn’t actually. In fact, I believe most KH players are going to expecting KH3 on ps3.

  • Pedro Silva

Considering most PS2 owners don’t own a PS3… yes it would, utterly stupid to announce that at this point where it seems there’ll be a market shift.

Most mass market consumers, that like KH are most likely praying they don’t have to shovel 600 bucks to play it.

  • Alexander

Ok, KH 3 isn’t going to be out for a while. So there will be plenty of time for the ps3 to saturate the market. Judging by how the ps3′s library is shaping up, it’s exclusive titles, and the fact there are inevitably going to be more price drops, I don’t believe sales will be as big an issue as it is now. So I certainly wouldn’t call the ps3 doomed so early in the game.

There is also the fact that most ps2 owers do intend on eventually purchasing a ps3. With hugely popular exclusives like KH3(it’s going to be on ps3…like honestly) and FF13, most mainstream gamers are going to want to get a ps3 to play them. You can’t argue with that. Insanely popular games like those are going to move ps3s off the shelves like nobody’s buisness, and Squenix knows that. Possible reasons for why KH 3 won’t be on other systems are probably 1. maybe they don’t want to develop more than 1 version of the game 2. xbox360 is not doing good in Japan. 3. Wii isn’t powerfull enough to “power” a game the KH dev team has envisioned. 4. KH games have traditionally been on Sony consoles.

  • Pedro Silva

that’s only a hipotesis, nothing makes us think PS3 will sell more than Wii this gen, unless we are going the “just wait until MGS4, Killzone 2, FFXIII comes out!!” path, we’ve been in it for 1 year now, and making a comeback is unlikely already, think of it, no console had a bad launch and still leaded, Saturn, N64, hell… Dreamcast. PS3 will keep being in the market but they shouldn’t take the lead.

KH games have traditionally been on Sony consoles because they were market leaders, that’s the only real reason for that, when it comes to money. One could say FF was traditionally on Nintendo consoles until N64, and still it shifted, because the money for squaresoft was elsewhere.

As for Wii is not powerfull enough… that’s bullcrap when they’re doing a PSP version with PS2 KH graphics, also… last gen if Square-Enix where to push either GC or Xbox it would be miles and bounds superior to KH on PS2, same for FF’s, and they didn’t because PS2 was the market leader, simply put… they would make more money in there.

So basically… That’s just a excuse, they don’t need PS3 or whatever to do KH3 (and Wii is not as weak and you might think), above all they need a public for it; and counting on PS3 is a little… blind, right now, they invested enough money there already and the console is still staggering.

I agree X360 is not a good choice, but that’s just obvious.

  • Alexander

What your saying is a hypothesis too.

Apparently many private research firms predict that ps3 will end up winning this gen war, albeit, not by the large margin they the won the last gen war.

Yes, we’ve been in it for one year…that’s it, just ONE year. We got like what, 4 or 5 years maybe before the next batch of consoles start appearing.

“One could say FF was traditionally on Nintendo consoles until N64, and still it shifted, because the money for squaresoft was elsewhere.”

“As for Wii is not powerfull enough… that’s bullcrap when they’re doing a PSP version with PS2 KH graphics, also… last gen if Square-Enix where to push either GC or Xbox it would be miles and bounds superior to KH on PS2, same for FF’s, and they didn’t because PS2 was the market leader, simply put… they would make more money in there.”

I never said that could be the only possible reason why it won’t appear on Wii. Not to mention I was making several guesses. Also, those games for the portable aren”major installments” for KH. If KH 3 came on a portable, I would laugh.

“and counting on PS3 is a little… blind, right now, they invested enough money there already and the console is still staggering”

Like I said in my 2nd post, there are several reasons how the ps3 could start doing well. It’s library is shaping up with lots of promising games, with excellent exclusives, all of which look WAY more better in comparison to the Wii’s. I’m not saying the Wii doesn’t have good games on the horizon, I’m just saying it’s obvious the ps3 has significantly more. Inevitable price drops. Great third-party support, as opposed to the Wii. Those factors can make the ps3 a very viable system in the *FUTURE*..keyword future(i.e. not now. lol sorry) This game isn’t coming out anytime soon, I’m think they said it would be 3 years before a possible release. That’s plenty of time for Sony to get the price lowered to an acceptable place. That’s plenty of time for lots of kickass games to come out. So that’s plenty of time for the ps3 to sell. If a few years from now, the ps3 still looks bad(which I strongly believe it won’t), then Squenix might port this game to another system that’s doing well.

You come off as a Nintendo fanboy, and I’m sure you think I’m a Sony fanboy. It doesn’t matter, cause I honestly don’t really care about this discussion anymore. I like all 3 systems, and I plan on enjoying all. But I truely believe ps3 has the most promising future lineup of games. Most of my favorite franchise are going to be on the ps3. Tekken, DMC, Soul Calibur, FF, KH, Star Ocean, Killzone, MGS, etc, so that’s another reason why I want a ps3. To me, the Wii has been overated. There have been some good games, but what great game has come out lately? Both systems had crappy games on launch, but ps3 is slowly getting better games.

Analists simply don’t change their speech because sony won two generations in a row, even that is changing now though and since when did analists mean anything?

1 year is a lot, go see console history, if you start bad it’s hard as hell to get on top (infact it never happened) because you’re not only fighting competion you’re fighting yourself.

You implied the team needed more power than Wii had, hence the comment; all this quite simply because… the key point in here is… PS3 at this point doesn’t make any sense, despite you saying it does.

As for line-ups, to be honest I’ve got no interest in discussing them in a KH topic, neither do I have for wether I am a fanboy or not; I don’t think PS3 has the best line-up coming, infact for me it’s the worse, some of the games you mention as favorite are multiplatform (DMC, soul calibur) and you’re already counting on KH on PS3, and Killzone 1 was crap I find it hard to read you’re a fan to the point it’s a favorite. So yeah, you come out as a fanboy, but I’ve got no interest in that, I didn’t make a fuzz over KH2 being on PS2 (or KH1 for that matter) it was just obvious since the market was the way it was and PS2 was the market leader. Now I want that treatment for the market leader, being market leader always waranted investment be it on SNES, PSone, PS2 or even DS. For me Wii is the better one, possibly being edged by the X360 one, then PS3, with fewer titles and a lot of them going multiplatform; sure it’ll have good titles and you can hand to them, but that doesn’t necessarily warant more marketshare than it currently has.

Frankly I haven’t touched the Wii in a while after Zelda and Sonic, at least not until Mario Galaxy at the end of this year.

Seriously, I don’t get all the whining from people about their favorite games’ sequels coming out on the PS3. Yeah, I know $600 is not cheap (it’s 500 now w/ 5 Blu-ray movies), just save some money and get all 3 systems, or if not at least 2. You’re not seriously saying in the next 6 years or so you would just be happy playing Wii and nothing else right? Sure graphics is not everything as long as the games are fun, but the Wii looks horrible at 480i/p running on a 46″ LCD, can’t even compare.

All 3 systems will have good games and exclusives down the road, and I’m very happy I own PS3 now alrdy and just wait for the good games to come, you would only miss out on them entirely if you refuse to get that system.

  • Matti

Remember how Dreamcast was really cool and got KH and Halo and… billy hatcher?…. oh wait no we don’t because that long life span ran into the next gen.

  • Matti

and why spend money on all 3 systems when you could go to the movies or by books or sky or some SUPER FUN THING! That would buy you a flight to some exotic getaway… maybe the money for games on 3 platforms would pay for your stay? Maybe you could own a real dog instead of a ninfakedog. But its not just the money since some people are well off, its about the time you would spend playing games on 3 systems… that could go into some major self improvement! but honestly i’d rather stay indoors and play video games. DOKI DOKI!
