Atlus to back the Playstation 2 in 2008

By Spencer . October 13, 2007 . 6:39am

atlus1.jpgIn this month’s Atlus fan letter, Hello Hello (who I think comments here too!) asked, “How long does Atlus U.S.A. plan to keep localizing PS2 games?”

Atlus responded with, “While we can’t get into specifics, we can say that Atlus will continue to support the PlayStation 2 into 2008. While the next-gen platforms hold a great deal of promise and potential, much of which is already being explored at present, it is very often the case that viable platforms with large install bases are for the most part abandoned when the new generation of consoles appears. The PlayStation 2, with its tremendous user base, is one of the first platforms in industry history to defy this trend. As long as developers continue to design great games for the system, Atlus will continue its support.”

So the next question is what can Atlus bring over next year? Super Robot Taisen Original Generations, Persona 3: Fes and Growlanser VI are the obvious possibilities. But over at Siliconera we like to look at the obscure possibilities like Dragon Shadow Spell and Summon Night 4 from Flight Plan and Shining Wind from Sega.

Glad to see my PS2 will still get some use

We’re prefer making low budget games with semi-3D sprites, but the people who buy NextGen consoles don’t want to see that, so we’ll stick with PS2, PSP and DS until gamers have our cutesy Anime games coming out of their ass, and then we’ll see.

Hello Hello does in fact post here, and enjoys Siliconera a lot!

Anyway back on topic, I was really happy to see that Atlus U.S.A. is going to keep localizing PS2 games for at least another year.

Dr. Slump Says:

I always get annoyed when new consoles come out and developers just abandon the old ones, just when game designers have figured out how to make the most of the consoles’ technology. (Look at early PS2 games vs more recent ones.) The PS2 is already in many millions of people’s homes around the world, so there’s absolutely no reason why more games should not be released for it.

Dr. Slump Says:

On that note, I would really love to see Summon Night 4. I’m not sure whether I would buy P3: Fes. After 60 or so hours with P3, I’ve had just about enough of it. It was fun at first, but starts to get very repetitive.

Aw man, don’t tease me. I’d love every one of them, especially SRT:OG, Dragon Shadow Spell and SN4.

I second that.

This is good news indeed.

Spencer Says:

@Hello Hello - Hello! (ha!) thanks for the compliment and I’m glad Atlus picked up your question.

@markgreyam - sorry to get your hopes up ;)

@Dr. Slump - very true! But new releases from the Japan are starting to dry up :(

Pichi Says:

New releasese from Japan might be drying up, but there are plenty of games already out that Atlus should consider for bringing!

Like that Atlus is supporting PS2, not really ready for next-gen at this time.

Alexander Says:

@Pichi

Atlus is working on P4 for ps3, according to IGN. Hopefully that isn’t the only next-gen game they’re working on. But they’re ready for the next-gen(err, present gen? I don’t even know anymore…).

jeffx Says:

I will keep purchasing everything Atlus puts out even if it makes the_importer a sad puppy.

Pedro Silva Says:

wise move, but I wish that translated into Wii+PS2 support. (even if it’s ports, Atlus have no budget to push systems to the limits so…)

Noun Says:

I’d really love to see Atlus take a gamble and try something like Princess Maker 5 or Spectral Gene, though my immediate need is to see FES ship.

Who am I kidding?
If Atlus would bring Seaman 2, then everything would be cool. ;)

Kitsune Sniper Says:

I hope they localize SRWOG1+2…

As long as they don’t make the same mess they did with the GBA games. Those menus were friggin’ undecipherable!

Pedro Silva Says:

Hmmm… Atlus localizing PS2 games while it’s time?

Then I want Persona 3: FES and Princess Crown, at least.
