Monolith Soft returns to their RPG roots

somab.jpgRemember Soma Bringer? That new RPG Nintendo is publishing next year? Monolith Soft, the creator of Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos is developing the title. This is the first new project announced from Monlith Soft after Nintendo purchased the studio back in May. The other game they are working on is the elusive Disaster: Day of Crisis, which is quite a distance from Monolith Soft’s usual RPG fodder.

Yay! Monolith Soft seems like a good RPG devoloper, so Soma Bringer might be the next Castlevania + Xenosaga (is that a good combo?). Xenosaga I & II for the DS was good, so let’s hope Soma Bringer will bring in some new Nintendo RPG fans.

But Monlith Soft working on Diaster isn’t very good (sorry for that joke or pun). A type of devoloper should stick to their forte (like Square and RPGs) or the game is a flop. We don’t even know what is the main gameplay of Diaster and the Wiimote controls. Let’s hope Monlith can combine Action and RPG elements into Diaster.

Nintendo acquiring Monolith Soft as a second party developer was definitely a wise and solid business decision on their part. With their strong track record of developing quality RPGs, such as the aforementioned Xenosaga and Baten Kaitos series, I’m certain Soma Bringer will follow suite by delivering yet another memorable role playing experience from this very talented development studio.

It goes without saying Disaster: Day of Crisis is shaping up extremely nicely as well. As essentially a spiritual successor to Irem’s Disaster Report and its sequel, Raw Danger, involving the same concept of surviving through deadly environmental hazards including blizzards and floods.

This unique formula has worked wonderfully in the past, and will naturally be put to good use once again in Disaster: Day of Crisis.
