Episodic gaming comes to the PS3, Rat Race is on the horizon

ratrace.jpgComedy adventure games are a dangerous territory. You either nail it like Telltale Games did with Sam & Max or the jokes fall flat like and the game bombs. Super-Ego Games, who one time worked on a Barbie title with Activision, is about to gamble with humor in Rat Race. Individual episodes of the game will be sold over the Playstation Network beginning this winter. In the game you play a grunt at BiggCo, a fractured corporation, with the goal of making through the day. Since the game is supposed to be funny it has a monkey and you have to “neutralize” it.

I’ve really enjoyed the Telltale games so far. But then again, I was already interested in the characters and worlds of Bone and Sam & Max. If presented with a random work-parody environment, I don’t think I’d be nearly as interested. As some proof of that, I’ve been trying to play the Weekday Warrior Half-Life total conversion. That is an amateur project, but even so, it’s really not vibing with me. There hasn’t been a lot of good satire about work since, well, Office Space and the Office. Maybe if there was a licensed “The Office” adventure game I’d get a little bit more excited. But one of the problems about games about work is that they do remind me somewhat of… work. Super-Ego has a promo video up on their front page. If this is an indication of the level of humor to expect from the final production I remain unoptimistic. Good luck to them, though. At least they’re trying to step away from licensed Barbie nonsense. The Barbieâ„¢ Diaries High School Mysteryâ„¢ contains both action and role-playing elements! Woo, I always wanted to level up Barbie.
