This holiday season Sony is going to release the budget conscious 40GB Playstation 3 in North America for $399. The cheaper model also comes with a bonus not found in other regions, a free Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray disc.
Remember the 40GB Playstation 3 will not play PS2 games. If you care about complete backwards compatibility the 80GB model is your best bet and Sony is slashing $100 off the price tag. The 80GB model with software emulated backwards compatibility now runs for $499.
I know, this is crazy, I don’t think any console before has gone thru a dozen of hardware updates w/in a year of its release. For a new technology like Blu-ray or DVD burners back then, I can understand each iteration getting better and cheap in a short period of time, but a console that is supposed to last for the next 5-6 yrs, talk about them giving consumers a jib. I’m still peeved getting stuck w/ a 20Gb HDD for my 360 which constantly runs out of room, meaning I need to dish out an addt’l $200 for a bigger hard drive. When Sony axed the 20Gb, I thought great, just one version of system, now it’s like 6.

ugh, another UPC? talk about segmenting the market… Once Nintendo offers a new DVD-enabled Wii that’ll be the complete trifecta.
What is it with companies releasing new versions of their hardware right away these days?
