Dan is really hyped up for Rock Band and Chris Kohler over at Game|Life makes it seem like the perfect party game. Sure, I think the concept of having a group of people play instruments together is a novel idea, but I just can’t get into Rock Band. It’s not just Rock Band, it’s (gasp!) Guitar Hero too. Disclosure time: I’m not into rock music.
The kind of music on my MP3 player is electronica, mostly house and lounge, peppered with underground hip hop and the occasional ethnic grooves (Bombay Beats / Café Oriental). So, while I dig the idea of Rock Band, my lack of interest in “rocking” takes me away from the game. In a discussion last night, I came up with my own Rock Band equivalent that will probably never exist.
It’s called Nightclub and it supports four players. One person has turntables and has to keep the beat in line by rapidly swapping records and scratching. Another person acts as the MC and rhymes to words on screen. You can’t have a nightclub with out people dancing so another person has to dance to the beat. Then the final person controls an on screen light show by pressing the correct sequence of buttons. Something like Boom Boom Rocket. I guess this is a mix of Dance Dance Revolution, Beatmania and that awful Get on Da ‘Mic game from Eidos… and unfortunately for me it will never see the light of day.
Just to satiate my curiosity are any Siliconera readers anticipating this?
Great, two copies sold! Now to find a publisher to bring this to XBL ![]()
meh, I think Rock Band is the “Steel Batallion” of party games.
Konami did sort of do this back in 1999, with the Beatmania IIDX / DDR Club Versions. One person would DJ, the other would dance, and if one side screws up, the other side suffers on their note/step chart.
Shame it died after only one release.
Well I don’t think the idea really works, electronica is made in such a different way than rock music. Sometimes it doesn’t even involve instruments…
“Electronic Dance Music” not “Electronica”
I once had a similar idea. “Nightclub Tycoon”. The player would build the club, hire a DJ, pick the style of music.
I just don’t think there are enough fans. Maybe in Europe. But even then, there’s so many sorts of dance music that it would be impossible to please them all, and make it hard to sell the game.
Dude, I’m down for this. And, you know, if you expand on the genre you could probably hook some rockers anyways. Throw in a back up bass for rhythm and you’ve got it sold ![]()
@JeremyR
Funny I don’t see that anywhere in the article… I see electronica though.
Is this another clone to Beatmania?
Western developers have such a thick face, they keep copying Japanese originals without paying credit.
Look at the lame Guitar Hero/Rockband vs the original and better GuitarFreaks and Drummania.
Look at Dancing with Stars vs Dance Dance Revolution.
copy more enough said.
@Dan Dickinson - very interesting! I never knew about this combination although I did import DDR 2nd Club Mix for the Dreamcast. Now I have to track down a machine…
@573 - Hmm… DJ Max Portable is the main alternative, but it ditches the DJ pads for PSP buttons or a keyboard.
I just cant get into house or electronica (are they the same?). I find it a soulless music. It has nothing to say.
I don’t mean to piss people off. I just don’t get the music.
wow this is uhh pretty crappy lol. Sorry but theres no way sitting there playing the same synthesised beats over and over again can be fun. Which is why Rock Band and Guitar Hero are fun because its ACTUAL MUSIC.

That would actually be awesome and I’d totally buy it. But there’s something about the drums and guitar that let you rock around a bit (Swinging drum sticks and wailing on guitars). When you’re DJ’ing the most you can do it a little head bobbing (at least that’s how I was when I used to DJ).
But I’d still totally buy it so we could play over XBL
