Insert Credit has been talking about the 20th Anniversary of the PC Engine, which passed last week. Two known events occurred… both in Japan. In one failed celebration German fans were accosted by police after taping a poster on a construction site in Akihabara. Not the best way to celebrate the home of Keith Courage!
There were happier events, like this small party in a bar somewhere in Tokyo where a crowd shared drinks over Bomberman. Since I spaced and forgot the system that brought us Bonk and Zonk had a special anniversary, I’ll kindly thank others for reminding me. My best memory of the PC Engine was when I saw the TurboExpress, basically a portable TurboGrafix-16. The device was the pinnacle of handheld gaming because you could play the console games on the road… for about two hours when the batteries died.
Anyone else have fond memories of NEC’s first and last console?
THe PC engine was big in Japan, but it lost eventually. I remember seeing the Turbo express and seeing the price tag of $200. This system was home to my favorite character Air Zonk….now that game rocks!
Tons of fond memories… from paying 20$ for Dracula X in mint condition to playing Dungeon Explorer and Neutopia with my grandma until 3AM for 2 weeks straight.
Never got a chance to play Rondo of Blood on it, but I remember one of my first games was Street Fighter (the first one, not SFII) on the PC Engine CD-rom add-on. There were lots of good shmups and ninja games too, and Zonk (PC Genjin) was a great mascot, just like Sonic and Mario. I was too young to remember the system well though since I was in grade school, I thought the think hue cards were very nifty compared to the chunky NES cartridges.
@jeffx - wow Rondo of blood for $20 is sweet, but playing Dungeon Explorer with your grandmother is out of this world
@badfish - Yes! Air Zonk indeed rocks!
@Edgekun - ahh… good point. I can’t think of any PC-Engine clones. Perhaps none were made because finding the physical games is quite a challenge?
@Aoshi00 - you may have missed the original Rondo, but you can experience it on the PSP ![]()
Only more recently, when I’ve discovered that it actually had a couple old gems on the VC. Dungeon Explorer, Bomberman 93 (great version for party gaming), Ninja Spirit, ect.
lol, that’s what I did actually, been playing Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP for the past week, the old Castlevania is so damn hard and unforgiving. After some practice though, my old school reflex starts to kick back in and the platforming is just heaven. I can see why they say Rondo was a good game, got to thank Iga for re-releasing it since so few people got to experience it on the PC Engine, at just the right time too since it’s starting to feel a little dated.

Lots of fond memories, considering the TG16 was my first video game console. It’s really too bad that you can’t find any sort of console (other than Wii) to play PCE games on. In the event you can’t find a snes or nes, you could at least buy an FC twin. But sadly there’s no such alternative for this wonderful piece of gaming history. =(
