NiGHTs PS2 is Japan only…so far

Those of you hoping to see the PS2 revamped version of NiGHTs Into Dreams grace U.S. shores might be a bit disappointed or just really angry. In a recent exclusive interview with Takashi Iizuka, Sega Nerds posed the question about whether or not the PS2 remake would see a worldwide release to which Iizuka answered

There are currently no plans for the PS2 version to be released outside of Japan, and no plans for a Wii version either.

It is being released in Japan, due to the high demand for the game. So there are no plans for a worldwide release… so far.

If you're an importer, this news shouldn't really bother you; but to the many of you who missed out on the Sega Saturn version and were hoping the remake would be released here in the U.S. on either the PS2 or Wii, you may either have to wait a while, import the game, or just borrow a friend's Sega Saturn and his copy of NiGHTs Into Dreams

I think what surprises me the most is that there was a huge demand for the game in Japan. If Japan demands Shining Force III, will Sega listen? Here's hoping!

It would be nice if this remake just goes straight to the Wii w/ the new control, think they would pull a RE4 later? Or better yet as an unlockable extra on the new Wii sequel. At least I am able to play import PS2 games, unlike Wii's.
  • Sega is a weird company. They do all sorts of remakes (or ports) for games that no one was clamoring for, but for their most legendary games, they don't do anything with.

I mean, did we really need an Alien Syndrome remake? Why not a Panzer Dragoon Saga port or remake instead?
  • Same here; I plan to import this if nothing else.

Unfortunately, even if fan demand for a Shining Force III port on PS2 is strong in Japan, that doesn't necessarily mean Sega will localize the game for North America either. I mean, if they're really this up in the air about brining their PS2 remake of NiGHTS to the United States, which really doesn't require any localizing at all in the slightest, then there's no way Sega will take the time and effort to even translate Scenarios 2 and 3 of the title for a Western audience, despite the fact they left us hanging with only Scenario 1 of the storyline translated as Shining Force III on the Saturn stateside.

I'll gladly import the NiGHTS remake on PS2, but if they ever were to port Shining Force III as well, I'd certainly have to pass on this instance for that game if Sega releases it for Japan only. NiGHTS is a very import friendly title with little to no Japanese text which will get in your way of the experience. Shining Force III, on the other hand, being a SRPG, will be quite the trial and error affair without a proper FAQ to guide you through the title (something I normally don't like to use in any video game). Most importantly, with the game still being in Japanese, I couldn't even begin to comprehend the storyline presented in all three scenarios, which would naturally be the main factor I'd even play Shining Force III in the first place.

I feel Sega will at least domesticate the Wii version of the game if nothing else. It'd be surprising for them not to take advantage of this opportunity.

I have to say, even though its sad to see that many US gamers won't get to play these new versions of NiGHTS and S.Force III, I really don't think very highly of Sega's localisations. As opposed to Nintendo, which puts a lot of quality into packing and general feel of the final product, Sega seems content to stuff a scant black and white pamphlet which leaves out a lot of info about the game (considering, for example, how much was left out of the Sonic 1-3 games about the background and storyline.) Importing is preferable for me, in any case.
  • @ Carmen

Sega had no plans to remake Shining Force III. I was merely suggesting it since Sega was only doing the NiGHTs remake because of the demands made by Japanese gamers alike.

I hope it ends up coming stateside. I've never played NiGHTS and I've heard a lot of good things about it. I plan on getting the Wii sequel, but I'll gladly by the PS2 port of the original if it makes it overseas.

I'll import, the japs will even have a limited edition artbook that we won't, even if the game makes the cut over.
