Final Fantasy IV: The After looks a lot like classic FFIV

Let’s forget about the 3D version of Final Fantasy IV and its interchangeable ability system for a second. The original Super Famicom version used sprites, some of the same sprites and tiles found in the sequel, Final Fantasy IV: The After. Square-Enix opted to use the classic graphics either to preserve nostalgia or save on development costs. You decide.

The battle system also looks familiar, but the story is new. You play as Cecil’s son Theodore (left screenshot, second character on the right hand side) who has to return to the moon. Rosa, Cid and other cast members will make an appearance in the game’s monthly downloadable chapters. To entice people to check it out Square-Enix is giving the prologue chapter out for free.

Darn, why does this game actually have to look cool? I’ll never be able to play it unless they port it to a real game system.

Awww, yeah too bad they don’t have the original master cartridge of FFIV, they had to re-do the exact same graphics, background and battle system for this game :p

(square said they simply can’t release FFIV on Wii VC because they “lost” the master cartridge…well looks like they just found it back…how convinient is that :p)

Those aren’t FF IV graphics – the look much more like VI’s graphics.

    @ Shin

They said? then how could they make the GBA and PSone ports?

Also… VC is emulation, they don’t need the source code.

    pedrocasilva> good question.

well, that’s the answer they gave to the question “why not releasing FFIV-VI on Wii VC?”

I’m pretty sure you do need the source code, because at least some games are tweaked before being re-released on VC, like difficulty toned down or add another difficulty setting.

indeed, but they could always not do that, since they claim VC is supposed to be as close to the original as possible.

This said, I recall Square-Enix saying they could do more money on separate SKU’s rather than microtransactions, hence not being that interested.
