Sega is finally pulling the plug on the Xbox version of Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II in Japan. The last day online play will be available is January 31, 2008, five years after the initial launch date. When this happens Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst Episode IV will be the only version of original PSO that gamers in Japan can still play online. Please note that this announcement is only for Japan. Sega has made no announcements about shutting down Xbox servers in other regions yet.
Actually, Sega’s already shut down the PSO servers in the US. Blue Burst is closing on March 31st, and the GameCube servers already went down in April. Not sure about the Xbox version, though.
@RagolSlayer - yeah we’re aware of the Gamecube server shut down, this is the first news about the Xbox servers closing.
Wow, I’m sure the 2 Japanese PSO XBOX players will be disappointed >_>
is there any *other* way to play PSO online on Gamecube or Dreamcast still?

According to a Japanese contact of mine there are at least 10 JP players online on psox at any given time. More than 2 but still a very small population. There is about 25 active players on the North American version though.
