Omega Five takes flight on Wednesday

ofive.jpgAfter a quiet delay and an early rumor about its release date, Hudson sent a message confirming Omega Five’s January 8 release date. The robotic shmup rings in at 800 Microsoft Points ($10), a fair price for something I thoroughly enjoyed playing at TGS. There aren’t many side scrolling shmups on the market and if you’re a fan of the genre Omega Five deserves your attention. If you like four armed aliens that shoot acid Omega Five deserves your attention too.

Judging from trailer/comments around, Omega Five will probably be the next best thing on consoles since Gradius V. Can’t wait!

I’m looking forward to picking up Omega Five on launch day when its released for download on January 8. The game itself plays quite differently from your typical bullet hell shooter in the vein of Treasure’s cult hit Ikaruga, which is enough to warrant attention for this shmup I’d say. It’s great to see a little diversity in the 2D side scrolling market and Omega Five fills this void quite nicely by adopting a similar play style to the all time classic R-Type, one of the best shmup franchises out there in the world.

Omega Five also marks quite a big milestone for Natsume as well, since this 2D shooter is quite a huge departure from their usual assortment of Harvest Moon titles (their bread and money maker) seen on various consoles. It’s good to see them step up and take a stab at an action title once again with Omega Five as in the past they were known for publishing such powerful and overlooked action games such as Abadox, Shadow of the Ninja, S.C.A.T., and Shatterhand on the NES before hitting it big with Harvest Moon on the SNES.
