Sony axes 20/60 GB PlayStation 3s in Japan

ps3.jpgFarewell complete PS2 backwards compatibility. Sony is sending off the final shipment of 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 models in Japan at the end of this month. While Sony stopped producing 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3s in North America many moons ago, Japan has consistently had the three SKUs. The last PS3 standing is the 40GB PlayStation 3 which does not play any PlayStation 2 games. Of course gamers in Japan can always go hunting in Akihabara for an older model, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see those prices rise as they become a rarer in the marketplace.

Mike Says:

Shame about this one. I’ve always wanted the 60GB ones because of its built-in EE chip. I had to settle for the 40GB (NTSC-J) one because all the PS2 games sold in our shores are NTSC-U.
