The Master System lives on the Virtual Console

The Master System lives on the Virtual Console imagesBeginning next month Sega will release Master System games on the Virtual Console in Japan. The first two titles are Fantasy Zone for 500 Wii Points ($5) and Fist of the North Star for 600 Wii Points ($6). At the moment this news is only for Japan, but it’s highly probable Sega will do the same thing in North America in the future.

Personally, I can’t think of many Sega Master System games I’m eager to try again besides Phantasy Star and Golden Axe Warrior. Anyone have any suggestions other than getting the ultra rare Sonic the Hedgehog Master System version to compare it against the Genesis classic?

In related news, Sega also announced two Mega Drive (Genesis) titles for the month of February. Wii owners in Japan can look forward to Wrestle Ball and Gley Lancer.

I can't really think of anything amazing on Master System. I guess Zillion is okay.

The Wonder Boy series, alex in Miracle World, Psycho Fox, Ys (if you haven't the other versions), Sonic 1 & 2, Shinobi, ... Of course, most of MS games were downgraded ports of arcade games and now with the emulation you can play the arcade version easily... Fantasy zone is good but there is the arcade version and Fist of the North Star is GREAT!

The Power Strike games are Zanac-likes game by Compile, and was released for the Master System. The first one, I believe, is fairly similar in its play mechanics. In the U.S. the game was only sold by order though.

The Sega Master System had a good version of Space Harrier and R-Type (although if the VC has the TG-16 version of R-Type, it's better). Their Double Dragon was far superior to the NES version and is definitely worth playing. Zillion was good, and the Wonder Boy series was excellent. Alex Kidd in Miracle world was great but all of the subsequent Alex Kidd games on SMS were pretty weak (although Alex Kidd in Shinobi World was at least amusing in its bizarreness). Speaking of which, Shinobi was a great game as well. Golden Axe Warrior and Phantasy Star go without saying... especially Phantasy Star - that game is solid gold. I also liked Rambo - it was sort of a Commando Clone, and was a lot of fun (don't confuse this with Rambo III which was a light gun game). Spellcaster was a really interesting RPG/Action hybrid game, but I doubt they'll put it on the Virtual Console.

The Master System was my first Console, so I have a lot of love for that machine. Of course, I still have a working SMS, so I don't think I'll need to do the Virtual Console thing...
