Compile Heart goes casual, creates a Nintendo DS puzzle series

cmpile.jpgI’m still waiting for Conspiracy Entertainment to release Octomania (their first US release) and surprisingly it won’t be Compile Heart’s last puzzle game. Later this year Japan gets the first titles in their Puzzle Mate Nintendo DS puzzle series. Currently, there are three games in the series: Puzzle Mate: Number Mate, Puzzle Mate: Crossword Mate and Puzzle Mate: Oekaki Mate. All of them share a common mascot, the clown on the left hand side and they will arrive in Japan on April 17.

Perhaps, more interesting to note is how Compile Heart, a relatively small publisher, is shifting gears towards the causal crowd with the Puzzle Mate series and the three DS cart series with the Phoenix manga. These projects are quite different than their previous works like Rouge Hearts Dungeon and Agarest Senki.

When is Octomania coming out?

IGN seems to think its out already but I’m guessing its an outdated release date. Amazon says March 30th, so I guess that’s the closest date right now.

By the way, have you tried Conspiracy’s recent title to release, Winter Sports Challenge for Wii?

Spencer Says:

@Chris - I haven’t seen Octomania anywhere and I’ve been searching for it solely to support Compile Heart. Maybe it really is coming out in March? It wasn’t on Nintendo’s release schedule, then again no Conspiracy titles were. I missed out on Winter Sports is it any good?

Chris Dahlberg Says:

It’s better than some of the shovelware that Conspiracy has put out in the US (such as Ninjabread Man) but still very average.

Graphics are a carbon copy of Bode Miller Alpine Skiing and Torino 2006 (all three have the same developer), which isn’t awful but the athletes look rather lifeless. There is plenty to do in the game with a variety of events, but some work and some don’t. Figure skating, alpine skiing, and skii jumping control very well with the Wiimote but events such as curling feel almost broken as they’re near impossible to complete.

It does feature surprisingly witty announcers though. Probably will get a 5 or 6ish from me when I review it for Cosmos Gaming.

Those are great news for me, maybe there’s a hope for a new “Guru logic champ”. I love that game.
