PS3 Echochrome costs 50% less than PSP Echochrome

By Spencer . February 8, 2008 . 2:48am

ecps3.jpgOn March 19th two versions of Echochrome materialize in Japan. A physical UMD disc for the PSP costs 3,980 yen ($37) while the downloadable PlayStation 3 edition only costs 1800 yen ($17). Sony hasn’t announced any differences between the versions other than portability and if that is the sole difference I’ll stick to the more reasonable PlayStation Network download.

Take note that these prices are only for the Japanese release of Echochrome. Occasionally, Sony Computer Entertainment America alters prices for North America and when they do the resulting game is often cheaper. Piyotama, Go! Sports Ski, Jeanne D’Arc and Patapon are a few examples that come to mind.

Update: Thanks to Walaber's tip we know the reason why.

    What a gyp(!)

I suspect if you deduct the cost of manufacturing and distribution of a PSP game along with the retailer’s slice of the pie, you’d come up with something like 1800-2000 yen going to Sony/developer/publisher. The bigger question is how many retailers are going to stock the PSP version knowing that the PSP version has a very clear price disadvantage vs the PS3 version.

The latest issue of Famitsu states that the PSP version comes with over 100 puzzles and a “free mode” to create your own puzzles, as well as a few gameplay variation modes, while the PS3 version apparently only comes with 50 puzzles, and the “free mode” (it implies that the other sub-modes are not included).

@walaber – Ah! Thanks for the info. I wasn’t aware the PS3 version was crippled and I thought it included the create-a-puzzle canvas mode too. This makes a lot more sense than just tacking on UMD costs, but now I’m disappointed the PSN version won’t have canvas mode.
