Touching is good, the DS dinner date

ds.jpgLast weekend I had dinner at Watami, a causal Japanese restaurant known for cheap eats. Since the prices are low Watami tends to attract a younger crowd who doesn’t mind waiting for each dish to individually come out. Between chomping on tiny plates of sashimi there is a lot of downtime.

I sat down with my friends and noticed the table directly in front of me was a young couple huddled over a pink Nintendo DS. The tables are pretty tightly packed so I peeked over and noticed them entranced in a game of Cooking Mama. That night they weren’t the only table having a DS dinner date. During the time it took to order and eat five plates of food, two other couples in sight were focused on their DSes more than food. A phenomininon? Maybe!

I’m not about to turn Siliconera into a dating advice blog, but I imagine bonding over a portable game is a great icebreaker. Instead of asking asinine questions you can interact via a wireless game of Mario Kart. Or if you’re bold you can bring a single DS to share which would require two people sitting close to each other…

So, have any Siliconeraers played games on a date? Used their handheld console as an icebreaker? Are planning to experiment with this over the weekend? Bonne chance if you are in the latter category!

Girls have always had a thing for Dr. Mario, that much I can confirm. I recall looong sessions when we started out. 5 years later, she owns a DS and recently bought a Wii, but has _no_ time to enjoy them. I recently got her hooked on Super Mario Galaxy and… she loves Super Smash Bros. Brawl!! Kudos to Nintendo for making an easy-to-pick-up fighter that pros and casuals can enjoy equally.

I never noticed it before, but the ladies do ask what I’m playing in the public and it takes off from there.
Mario and EBA …they get entranced by that.

Too bad for them Etrian Odyssey already swept me off my feet and keeps me engaged.

In our early dating days, my girlfriend bought herself a white ds lite and a copy of Animal Crossing. When I wasn’t at her place we would visit each other’s towns. It was pretty fun to do sending lovey-dovey messages back and forth, chasing each other and giving each other gifts.
