Nippon Ichi invites DS owners to visit Jigsaw World

jsworld.jpgSecond bit of Nippon Ichi news today, their second DS title is revealed and it isn’t based off an existing franchise. Although, Jigsaw World does have a connection to Disgaea since Etna is a playable character. However, this is expected since Nippon Ichi games are known for including cameos. Other characters include Mute Kid who wears a green visor and scarf, junior high school ninja named Ayame and a Mikan, a cat trapped in a box that looks like a loaf of Wonderbread with a tail.

Jigsaw World isn’t a strategy RPG either, it’s more of an action puzzler. Maybe Jump Ultimate Stars meets Hudson’s touch screen jigsaw puzzle game. Four players race to complete a jigsaw puzzle on the bottom screen. Points are given out each time a jig is properly placed. However, Mikan and company are more than cursors. They can attack each other with screen cutting special attacks too. While Jigsaw World sounds like something best experienced with friends there is a single player mode. Each stage is supposed to take around a minute to complete, which makes Jigsaw World a perfect game to play while on a train when it comes out this spring.

Hmm… that means Jigsaw World will be Nippon Ichi’s first ground up developed Nintendo DS release since Disgaea DS doesn’t come out into the summer.

TreeFrog Says:

Somewhat disappointing that NIS are returning to the ancient past. I’ve played “Doki doki shuttter chance” - one of their earlier games, which has a similar premise (a competitive jigsaw solving game).
Fundamentally, solving jigsaws in a hurry just wasn’t a very interesting as a game mechanic, so lets hope the fighting-type elements can spice this one up.

Debatable whether or not this is not an existing franchise…
Check out Jigsaw Madness for the PS1 by NIS (not sure if this is the same game as TreeFrog mentions.)

Spencer Says:

@HB3 / TreeFrog - Yeah, I’ve seen Jigsaw Madness, but all the characters are new so I suppose this would be a new franchise the same way Shin Megami Tensei and Persona are different. Perhaps, a more fitting term is cousin?

HB3 Says:

More like spiritual successor; sticking with NIS, the Marl Kingdom franchise features new characters and storylines with each successive game, but all are based in the same world.
